Product Information

New from Handspan Studios, 4k Fabric Shaders 1 for Iray gives you 4k photo realistic fabric shader presets in a current (Pantone) color fashion palette. This collection has a number of basic weaves and types of fabric, if you adjust the material settings you can get a lot of other fabric looks from these same base textures. You can use the plain fabrics as a base for the overlay patterns. The overlays come in metallic foils, iridescent multi color and regular colors which can be added on top of these or any other smooth fabric and there's no reason you couldn't use the pattern overlays to decorate other types of materials or objects as well.

This collection contains 278 Shader Presets and the tiling texture maps they are based on. Shaders are great for updating older clothing items to render in Iray and for a starting point when making UV map textures. Each pattern comes with a number of coordinating color presets. Easy to use, scalable, fun to customize with the pattern overlays. By adjusting the diffuse overlay weight, color and top coat parameters you can achieve unique looks. The details like weave and threads are very clear on the texture, bump and normal maps meaning that the fabric will react to your scene lighting, drapes and folds more like it should. The overlays contain only the patterns and take their surface texture from the base fabric below, they look best on the smoother surfaces like a dark silk.

The 278 shader presets consist of 45 unique seamlessly tiling texture patterns plus the preset color, gloss and roughness variations based on those patterns. These shaders are based on 363 high resolution texture, bump, overlay and specular maps and the various material settings customized for Daz Studio Iray. This set contains silks, satin, denim, corduroy, linen, metallic, polyester, nylon, lycra, wool and overlay patterns in foils and plain colors. There are a few quick presets to set the u and v tiling rate to 1x, 2x, 3x, 5x, 7x and 10x, they will work on any tiling shader without changing any other settings. Organized well with sub folders for each fabric type. Many more than could be shown in the renders. Hundreds of sensual, tactile textures that you will find useful in all kinds of renders.

The material settings may be used as a merchant resource in creating UV map textures for sale, the tiling texture .jpg themselves in some cases used resources in their creation so 8 of those are not included this time, the rest are ok for use. See the readme notes for the details.

Additional Details

  • Shaders are very lighting dependent. If a shader comes up too shiny or dull you can adjust it through the glossiness or the top coat channel, a darker color or lower value will be less shiny, higher roughness will look more matte. The lighting used to create these and the promo images was Dimension Theory's Iradiance Studio Lights and expansion, mostly brightness preset “F-H” and Iradiance Light Probes Expansion 2.
  • When using the pattern overlays, apply a base fabric first. Foil or metallic looking ones will look best on a dark or black background. The ones that are flat color look ok on any background, the colors will still look stronger in most cases against black. To get different results try adjusting the diffuse overlay color by adding more or less grey or by adjusting the top coat settings or colors. All overlay patterns use only top coat and diffuse overlay channels to get their effect. The number of pattern repeats is set by the base fabric repeats. You can use the overlay on top of any fabric shader you have as long as it's not using the diffuse overlay and top coat channels for something else. You can use the tiling repeats presets to adjust your pattern repeat but if the original fabric scale is too far from the pattern you might get some rendering artifacts. If you use one against a color and the colors mix in a way you don't like, make sure “diffuse overlay strength” is turned all the way up, this will stop any bleed through from the color of the fabric below, the foils are not set that way to begin with as they look best on black at less than full strength. If you decide to try them against medium or lighter colors they may look too faint, this is the parameter to try adjusting first by adding a medium to dark color to diffuse overlay and adjusting the strength up to 100%.
  • Each fabric texture has only one optimal example of settings saved but you can get many more looks adjusting gloss, color, bump and normal strength and so on.
  • Each preset will reset the tiling to the original number so you will want to adjust the size last, after all the others. This is done in the “horizontal tiles” and “vertical tiles” parameters or you can use the quick settings in the main folder to change them with one click to x1, 2x, 3x, 5x, 7x or 10x. The x and y numbers should match unless you want to create a stretched look or sometimes objects like spheres look stretched and you can adjust one parameter to compensate. You can use the offset numbers to make the pattern repeat in a slightly different place on the x or y axis, useful for lining up a pattern with your clothing item. If the pattern looks fuzzy or blocky make those parameters a higher number (more repeats of the texture, this is unlikely to be needed at such high resolution.) if you get a digital noise look then the pattern is too small and reduce the number of repeats until it looks right. You can also reduce the texture size itself to save on resources, they still look great at 2048.
  • Use the included color chips HS4kFS1_DColorBlue.jpg, HS4kFS1_DColorGrape.jpg etc to add matching color in the diffuse overlay color channel or to match the color to other items and fabrics.
  • If nothing happens at all, make sure you have your model selected from the Parameters tab *Drop Down list* and also your material in the Surfaces tab before applying the shader. Overlay patterns and top coat effects will not show (in preview mode) until fully rendered.
  • The textures can also be used in any paint program with a texture fill function or a texture brush to paint UV map textures, they are a merchant resource as well with the following exceptions* because they used resources by XYZ texture. If you wanted to use these in a texture for sale I would advise getting a commercial use license from them, it's fine to use in rendered artwork without that:
    • HS4kFS1_Chiffon1
    • HS4kFS1_Cotton1
    • HS4kFS1_Cotton2
    • HS4kFS1_Cotton3
    • HS4kFS1_Cotton4
    • HS4kFS1_Satin1
    • HS4kFS1_Silk03
    • HS4kFS1_Silk04
  • All others are ok to use as texture fill in uv map textures for sale. They may not be redistributed or resold in their original tiling form or as a texture resource, the overlay patterns may not be used to create real world fabrics etc. but only to depict fabric in 3d artwork. Thank you for your support.
