Additional Details

  • It is typically best to use these environments with Depth of Field turned on. Since the default settings use the infinite sphere, it doesn’t usually require any adjustments to your model scale. Just pose and go. However, if you are wanting to use shadowing with the ground plane, you may encounter a few idiosyncrasies. Due to the limitations of the depth of field settings, it is typically not advisable to scale you models to actual fairy proportions of about 10% and try to place them at the proper distance they would be from the camera. Doing so will turn the depth of field inside out and may even cause a plain gray render. Instead you can increase the camera height to 10X higher and use your normal model scale and distances. This is simply treating the surround image as though everything was ten times bigger.
  • A note on lighting: The sunlight that is included in the helper has already been pre-aligned with the actual sunlight in the scene. If your character is darker than you want with default settings, you may do one of these methods. The easiest is simply to adjust the tone mapping exposure value to achieve your desired results; however, due to the wide dynamic range this may result in the background becoming overly bright. Another option is to adjust the environment intensity in the render settings under the environment tab. A third choice is to increase the light intensity of the included “sun light” directional key light. The final suggestion, and my preferred method is to simply render the main scene at the proper exposure and then render the foreground elements with the dome turned off and a lower exposure value in the tone mapping settings and then just overlay it on top when I composite the final image in Photoshop. That allows me to use it with transparency to control how much effect is applied.
  • One final note about Depth of Field, the main image for each of my Fairy Scale IBL products is composed from a collection of multiple renders with varied Depth of Field settings, which allows me to create very realistic Depth of Field that isn’t possible in a single IBL render. If you would like to learn more about these techniques, I will be releasing a tutorial about it soon. I will also be releasing one about how you can make your own environments using any 360o x 180o camera.
