It’s so quiet here above the fog, maybe too quiet. What secret is obscured? Will this misty silence confirm a place of peace or will my imagination conjure some dark reality?

This prop for Iray and 3Delight has many material presets that control color, density, as well as the puff scale and contrast. It’s easy to change the mood, go from smooth, undulating, and heavy to light, airy and patchy. It’s versatile to fit your story, this prop can be tilted to create a wall of fog or flipped to create smoke collecting on the ceiling. Change the shape using the included D-Former to lift the fog into a swell, which can be scaled small to fit a cauldron or large to encompass a cemetery on a hill.

The 3Delight prop has many more presets than the Iray version and can be adjusted to create volumetric effects (God rays) with the flip of a switch. This will increase render times. Both versions are sensitive to light, as both catch and scatter light for more realism to real fog. For Ambient Occlusion in 3Delight, you will experience faster renders using Age Of Armour's Advanced Ambient Light, with it’s ability to exclude surfaces, rather than using UberEnvironment2. The Iray prop works best with ambient light, especially HDR based lights.

Review the promos for which render engine was used as they have different presets/effects. Also look for ideas on lighting and camera angles. Your camera needs to be outside the prop for the fog to render correctly.

To see the prop in working view switch to drawing style: Wire Frame Shaded.

Additional Details

  • Product Notes:
    • Tips for Iray-
      • The fog prop is more realistic and renders faster with ambient lights, especially HDR based lights. Spotlights work best when pointing a similar direction as the camera.
      • You may need to increase render times to reduce noise and grain depending on the type of lights used and the softness of their shadows. Cameras can be placed anywhere except inside the prop, but higher angles work best when props and figures can be rendered from above and are seen descending down into the fog. SSS Amount controls the volume density.
  • Tips for 3Delight-
    • For occlusion in 3Delight you will experience faster renders using Age Of Armour's Advanced Ambient Light , and its ability to flag surfaces that will not be hit with light, rather than using UberEnvironment2. If you want to customize surfaces beyond the presets you can find Instructions for working with UberVolume here
    • The quality or graininess of the volume is mainly controlled by “Step Size”. The lower the number the smoother the fog. The prop can be adjusted to create god rays or volumetric effects by turning on “Accept Shadows” in surfaces tab. This is off by default as it increases render times and is not always needed. To access more settings in surfaces tab be sure to check the box “Show Hidden Surfaces” (in the sub menu).
  • Tips for both-
    • Both versions are sensitive to light, both catch and scatter light for more realism like real fog. The prop can be tilted to create a wall of fog or flipped to create the effect of smoke collecting on the ceiling.
    • Use the included D-Former to lift the fog into a swell which can be scaled small to fit a cauldron or large to encompass a cemetery on a hill. Instructions for using D-Formers can be found here
    • Since this prop has a sculpted top, it’s best to scale all dimensions rather than just “Y” to increase the height. Scaling on “Y” may start to show the geometry, as the top of the prop will begin to resemble peaks if pushed too far. When scaling much larger than default or when the D-Former is used, you may want to convert the prop to Sub-D to retain curves. To see the prop in working view use the Wire Shaded or Wire Texture Shaded draw style.
    • Cameras can be placed anywhere except inside the prop.
