Useful Mirrors is a collection of props with reflective surfaces allowing you to add more variety to your render choices.

The large plate glass mirror commonly use for wall mounting, would be useful in both commercial or institutional settings. The framed medium sized wall mirror for bedrooms and residential applications, and the self standing three panel mirrors sit on the floor, and can work for both residential and retail shop scenarios.

Also included in the set is; a spherical mirror ball that gives a full 180 degree distorted view of the reflection of the surrounding area; and a FunHouse mirror that plays havoc with the subject's form depending on placement and distance from the reflected surface.

There is also a “mirror shader” included, allowing you to apply this mat setting to any other prop or figure through the DAZ Studio surfaces tab. All in all, plenty of reflective variety available with these Useful Mirrors for DAZ Studio 3.1+ and above.

Please note that reflections in images add to the render time, and well balanced light sets with good ambiance setting allow the reflected image to match the surrounding areas. Tested in DAZ Studio with 3Delight standard lights and Uber Environment 2 lights.

Additional Details

  • Reflections increase render times. For example: UberEnvironment 2 takes a long time to process transmapped polys often times found in hair items. During a render in the mirror, that hair will often times be rendered twice in the image, the second time being the reflection of the hair. Hence the increase in render times. Something to be aware of.
  • Lighting affects how the reflection will appear. Included in the set are two basic, and balanced lightsets; one straight DAZ Stuido lights and second Uber2 lights. The lights are set with no shadow, and basically shine through the mirrors to lighten up the subjects face so it reflects evenly with the surrounding environment. So the colors displaying on the mirrored forearms, is from the blue sky, white clouds, and sandy ground , as well as her outfits and skin.
  • It is also very important to have the mirrors reflecting something. 3D space is an empty void, and the mirrors will reflect the empty blackness of that space. You need to enclose the area so the reflections can be calculated and displayed. Easy enough with an enclosed interior room, but if your scene is outside you need a skydome and ground for the reflection. The promo image of the girl with the mirrored forearms, was dome with A Dungeon Entrance, which has both a large ground area and skydome as part of the set.
